Thioureas
Accelerators for chloroprene (CR) and epichlorohydrin rubbers (ETU, DETU, DBTU, DPTU). Some are being substituted because of their health classification.
Thioureas are used particularly in the metal oxide cure of chloroprene (CR) and epichlorohydrin (ECO) rubbers. ETU has long been the standard in this field.
Because of the reproductive toxicity classification of ETU and its place on the REACH candidate list, there is a move toward alternatives such as MTT, DETU and DBTU. Compound formulation adjustment is needed to match the speed/property balance of ETU with the alternatives.
Comparison
| Code | Use | Note |
|---|---|---|
| ETU | CR, ECO standard | On the SVHC candidate list |
| MTT | CR, ETU alternative | Better processing safety |
| DETU | CR, EPDM | Low-temperature cure |
| DBTU | CR, EPDM | Slower than ETU |
| DPTU | CR, secondary activator | Also used in NR/SBR |
Relative, qualitative comparison; varies with formulation and rubber type.
